[ 2 Challenge ]

Now I had a challenge on myself.Having 5 sisters and only one younger brother in a highly orthodox bramhin family, only thouse in my group can guess the struggle parents had in thous days educating and getting all of them married. The other part being my working hours [ in a the textile mill except Sunday's all other days the plant works from 7.00 AM to 7.00 AM.,with a break for lunch after every 4 hours.Which means I had to be at my work spot at 7.00 AM,3.00 PM, & 11.00 PM.It was called First shift at 7.00 AM.Second shift at 3.00 PM and Third shift at 11.00 PM.To leave a girl of just 19 years of age all alone at 11.00 PM in a house which was isolated from other buildings was a tough problem for me but my wife was innocently blind to any thinking that I had of the kind in my mind.To my luck very soon I was promoted and was placed in charge of duties which involved maintenance of machines and this was being done only during day shift. My duty hours now was only from 7.00 AM to 3.00 PM.[ so no problem ].
So it was a challenge again for me to have only a boy first and think next. How do you do this?.
I consulted lot of my colleagues and collected tips of all sorts including a spiritual tip on how a baby boy can come first in the family. My wife did hers which will come elsewhere in this [ 1 to ? ].
I did all which are classified tips including the spiritual and practiced the spiritual till the last day.I will mention that day later.
I was working in a textile mill in Coimbatore near the hill station 'Ooty' which was a tourist paradise thouse days in 50's.There was a qualified technical assist to help me and two experienced jobbers ( Foreman's in Engineering terminology ).They were my consultants on personal matters also.I mention this,as it is relevent to my problems. There was a senior bramhin administrative staff who was incharge of the plant production accountings. He was my financial adviser in the sence whenever I was short of cash he would lend me any amount.Even the Deputy Plant Manager would but I never did approach him except for just once and once only. Why did I do it,will be said in some other context.
I went on as the days went by and was more serious in my job than anything.I never bothered to ask my wife if she was pregnant.By God!!, my heart skipped a beat when she told me she was pregnant.

All sorts of worry and fear started.

[ 1 . I Start writing ]

How do you start writing about your son from day one of his entry on this planet after he has become a father and starts a blog of his own and starts writing on his first born even befour the baby lands on his arms?.
Frankly I never would have attempted to write the way he has written.Being a tough guy I was faced with a challenge.
When I commented to my son that I have this and that blah, blah to write,he said you start let me see how you go.
I took it as a challenge and started this from day one as per my method which is 45 years old.
Thouse were the days my son, which are embedded in my mind about you and your Mom.
After my marriage which was a arranged marriage,I had no plans or any wish to have a baby but after two years my first lady was mentioning by her sweet voice mumbling something sounding like baby, baby. For nearly three years I did manage but my father would not leave me,one day he told me that my father in law had a doubt on my ability to make a baby. That was it a challenge. The rest is now 40 plus years.

SANGITA KAITHIWADA'S MELANGE CREATION.

Introduced by Natasha Pratap

Sangita is effervescent and energetic. At forty, she exudes the curiosity, enthusiasm and insatiability of a fourteen year old. Yet, at times she will surprise you with her serenity, certainty, and centredness. It is this seeming contradiction that enables her to dream a dream and make it a reality, not just for herself, but for all the others that she always had in mind.

Of course, it wasn't overnight that she got to be this way. Sangita's ventures arise from the depths of a lifetime's exploration. In her twenties, she was eager to learn various forms of creative expression. She first qualified as a graphic designer. This foundation was then complemented by further courses in jewellery designing, ceramics, fashion designing, interior decoration, photography, and silkscreen printing. A combination of all these led to the founding of Mélange, a fashion house whose every minute detail reflects Sangita's talent and taste.

Through the process of setting up Mélange, Sangita was struck by the tremendous debt we owe to our art and craft heritage. Even today, they play a pivotal role in clothing us, dressing our rooms, and enhancing the quality of our lives. In recognition of this, Sangita established Morcrafts, a non-profit dedicated to increase the interaction between rural artisans and urban designers.

In October 1998, Sangita launched a special year-long, non-sale exhibition of modern Indian art with the support of Neville Tuli. Held at a unique gallery called The Window set up expressly for the project, the exhibition allowed students and collectors to observe significant works of contemporary art for a fortnight each. The result was a historically significant step towards building a knowledge base in this sphere. Today, Sangita keeps up her dedication to art by serving on the Executive Council of HEART (Holistic Education and Art), and on the Advisory Council for Aesthetics and Style of Osian's, Connoisseurs of Arts Pvt. Ltd.

So how does Sangita manage so many commitments? By never losing perspective of the truly important things in life. She believes firmly in spending quality time with her family and herself. "I have been practicing yoga, and now t'aichi, for over ten years," she says. "The benefits keep unfolding." Perhaps this is the secret of her success.

HELPING WOMEN FORGE CAREERS

Helping women forge careers.
By Nick Yates

A BOLTON apprentice has won praise from a UK initiative helping women into work.

Microbiologist Sarah Tompkins, aged 28, lives in Runcorn, but works for Lantor (UK), a textiles firm based in St Helens Road, Bolton. She was recognised by the Women & Work Initiative at a ceremony in Derby last week.

The initiative is run by Skillfast UK, the sector skills council for fashion and textiles. It works with UK businesses to ensure recruitment and career pathways for women in sectors where there are skills shortages and where women are under-represented.

Ms Tompkins said: "I cannot thank Skillfast-UK enough for the opportunity they provided me. When I first came to work at Lantor UK I never thought that 12 months later I would be in a management role, with the opportunity to learn a whole new area of my chosen profession. Without the training and mentoring I undoubtedly would not have been given this opportunity. My career in management is no longer just a dream."

Skillfast-UK helps to resolve skills shortages by identifying specific training needs. It aims to offer women the opportunity to realise their potential in other areas of the business.

Lantor (UK) utilised the Women & Work initiative to support the development of Miss Tompkins' microbiological technical expertise at management level.

Richard Kiedish, managing director of Lantor (UK), said: "The Women & Work initiative allowed us to develop a specific and structured mentoring programme for Sarah internally, which helped her to build her management ability within the context of her professional career here at Lantor."

He added: "When a management vacancy arose last Christmas, we were able to promote Sarah to quality manager. Not only did this provide her with a previously impossible career move, it also helped us to fill a vacancy that would traditionally have been extremely hard for us to recruit in the past."

Linda Florance, chief executive of Skillfast UK, said: "I am keen to encourage women to consider a career in our sector, because it offers so much variety. It is an incredibly exciting sector covering everything from medical gauze used to heal sports injuries and technical fibres in aircraft wings, to high fashion garments and specialist cleaning services."
